Debate team takes tournament

"Remarkable," said Trey Gibson, LSUS debate coach and instructor, in regards to his championship-winning debate team's performance this weekend.
The debate team won the LIFA Tri-State Championship for their second year.
The tournament brought in teams from four states including Ole Miss and LSU-Baton Rouge.
All of the LSUS participants
advanced to the finals in the Novice Division. Amber Webb, sophomore, public relations, made it to the elimination round, or octa-finals, for the first time.
"We did really well," said Gibson.
Logan Brock, senior, speech, advanced to the quarter finals along with Rachel Cox, junior, English.
John Mazur, sophomore, accounting major, advanced to the semi- finals and placed second in the top-speaker-from-Louisiana division.
Ali Liberman, junior, accounting, placed second in the final round and won the second place speaker award. Liberman also won the Norwig Award, an honor given to the individual with the most combined debate points.
SGA President John Kay, sophomore, chemistry, advanced to the octa-finals. Kate Ryland, senior, business management; Matt Cash, senior, business management; and Jacob Carscadden, senior, electronic media journalism, also competed in the varsity division.
In the professional division, LSUS Alum Kris Lucas won second place. Savannah Baggerly, senior, speech, advanced to the semi-finals, and Deanna Candler, senior, speech, advanced to the quarter- finals.
Colby Walker, junior, business, and Justin McDearmont, senior, education, both competed in the Professional Division.
"Justin Mcdearmont and Nicole Hudgens dominated and beat the top ranked team," said Gibson. In the Team IDPA, Mcdearmont and Hudgens won first place in their debate.
"I'm proud of them," said Gibson.
Next up for the debate team will be competing in the Mardi Gras Tournament at LSU Baton Rouge.
