The operating hours for the HPE building are being reduced by an average of 12 hours, but it may affect fewer people than the numbers may appear.

Timothy McInnis, Health and Physical Education Facility Coordinator since 2007, who had a part in making the decision, said that it was mostly the morning hours and Saturdays that are being cut.

"We were just looking at what made sense," McInnis said.

He said that because it cost money to keep the large building open and there were only a handful of people who came on a regular basis during the morning hours, something had to be done.

"And the Saturday time was a similar situation," said McInnis. "We would have multiple workers for the different areas and there would be a tops of maybe 10 to 15 people, and that was a heavy day."

With the exception of the few people who came in the mornings, McInnis doubted anyone would notice the change.

McInnis also stressed that this doesn't mean the HPE building will never be open on Saturday again or that there will be any permanent closing of the building.

"If there was a big outcry, and people said 'we will come,' we'd bring it back and see if they came…as long as there are people coming, we can justify it being open [during those times]."

One last issue McInnis noted was that the students aren't aware of what the HPE gym offers.

"I know when they give the tours to freshmen or potential students they bring them over but I still hear people say, 'Oh, we have a pool?' It's a pretty nice pool."

The HPE building offers an indoor pool, gym, racquetball, Volleyball, an indoor track, dance room and weight room.
