"[Obama] doesn't talk about gay rights; he talks about human rights. He includes us and doesn't ostracize us from everyone else," said Kathy Lynch, vice-president of the Gay-Straight Alliance at LSUS.
In several of his speeches Obama has clearly stated that he is against same-sex marriage; however, he opposes the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which bars the federal government from legally recognizing same-sex couples and gives states the right to ignore same-sex marriages or civil unions performed in other jurisdictions.
No one is arguing that this issue will not be the first Obama addresses.
"We can only hope for something within the first six months," said Adrienne Critcher, faculty adviser of the GSA.
"A good first step would be a measure to allow the federal government to extend the same benefits to couples in civil unions, domestic partnerships or marriages, whether they are gay or heterosexual," says Glenn Greenwald, New York Times bestselling author and gay and lesbian activist.
Obama assertively vows to try and help same-sex couples, as he talks about bringing Americans together, giving us a "change we can believe in."
